Computer Recycling Process

1. Collect Materials

The first step to recycling your computers and laptops begins with collection of the e-waste. AIT collects electronic waste through pick-ups, mail-ins and drop offs at our facilities.

2. Sort E-waste + Asset Tracking

E-Waste is brought back to our facility for sorting by device type. If you have selected asset tracking for a certain device type, we will begin scanning those devices at this time. All serialized devices are reported in your free E-Waste Report,
which comprehensively details all materials by type and weight.

3. Hazardous Materials Audit

E-waste can be toxic to the environment and to us. In computers and laptops specifically, these toxic substances include cadmium in cables and wires, chromium and lead in circuit boards, and beryllium in motherboards. For laptops and computers specifically, it is very important to remove any batteries or power supplies before proceeding with the recycling process.

Any possible hazardous materials are assessed and carefully removed

4. Destroy Data

Your data security is paramount. Any and all electronics received are audited for data storage devices. Data storage devices can include Hard Drives (HDs,) Solid-State Drives (SSDs,) Tapes, Floppy Discs and more.

If any of these storage devices are present, we will destroy them in order to ensure that you receive fully secure chain-of-custody services. Our data destruction methods meet and exceed both NIST 800-88 and DoD 5220.22-M destruction standards.

AIT is capable of providing on-site and off-site data destruction services depending on your location.

All data storage devices will be shredded

Our data destruction methods include:

  • Data Wiping – Removing data from devices by using a read/write software by overwriting all possible data slots. The process is irreversible, but not the highest standard of data destruction. This method adds an extra layer of assurance depending on the security needs you require.
  • Data Shredding – Data shredding is known to be the most efficient and thorough method of data destruction according to both NIST and DoD standards.
  • On-Site Data Shredding and Reporting – The highest level of assurance would be to destroy sensitive data at your location. Not only can you witness the storage devices being destroyed, but you can also witness the asset tracking process as each is shredded.

5. Document & Report All Materials and Services Conducted

It is important to document your e-waste recycling efforts for both legal compliance reasons as well as to keep track of your sustainable efforts.

Our Recycling Certificates are provided with every e-waste recycling request.

Information Included on our free Certificates and E-Waste Report:

  • The total weight of e-waste recycled
  • The name of your company
  • Our internal reference number
  • A PO number if required from your company
  • The date the certificate was issued
  • The date services were rendered
  • The address at which services were rendered
  • A description of the services that were provided
  • If assets are serialized, you will receive a full list of all tracked devices with their unique identifiers
  • If data is destroyed, you will receive a Certificate of Destruction which includes the amount of data storage devices destroyed and what type of device they were
Any possible hazardous materials are assessed and carefully removed
