4 Reasons to Recycle your Electronics
Recycling electronic waste is not just a responsible choice; it offers lasting benefits for both the environment and our state. Read on for four critical reasons to recycle your e-waste!
1. E-Waste Contains Toxic Materials that Will Destroy the Environment
Electronic waste contains materials that will destroy the surrounding environment if disposed of improperly. For example, electronics containing lithium-ion batteries are flammable if not handled correctly. Hazardous chemicals may also combine and leak, creating a highly toxic material called leachate. Since e-waste may contain lead and mercury there is a risk for long-term health effects if there are leachates in soil with close proximity to neighborhoods.
When toxic chemicals leak into the soil they create dead zones where it’s impossible to grow anything anymore. Throwing your e-waste away in the trash means that it will 100% go to a landfill, which will contribute to the creation of more landfills.
2. Recycling E-Waste Promotes Re-Use of Materials and Less Waste
Choosing to recycle your electronic devices means that manufacturers can re-use gathered materials from old e-waste to make new electronics. In fact, there is a whole process called the circular economy framework which is designed to drastically reduce improper e-waste disposal and its risks!
Companies that embrace this model contribute to a healthier planet and better recycling practices. That’s where our commitment comes in— AIT is dedicated to helping you engage in sustainable practices effortlessly, making it simple to integrate responsible e-waste recycling into your operations.
3. Improper E-Waste disposal destroys animal habitats
The United States already has a lot of landfills — about 3,000 of them are active right now! That’s 1,800,000 acres of lost habitat all across the US, now dedicated to dumping trash. There are many different types of waste that end up in landfills, but e-waste specifically is what accounts for 70% of overall toxic waste!
4. Recycling Your E-waste Protects Your Data
Safeguarding your data is a critical point to consider for your organization! In fact, HIPAA Journal reported that 1 out of 4 data breaches was caused by negligence such as improper disposal! It’s crucial to destroy any data storage devices that may be inside of your electronics before recycling them.
Destroying your data storage devices also helps maintain customer trust and ensures compliance with privacy regulations. As your e-waste recycling partner, AIT makes recycling, data security and revolving services simple and secure for you and your team so that you can rest easy knowing your sensitive information has been completely destroyed! Have more to recycle but not sure if those devices contain data? Check out our guide on backing up your data before recycling for each type of electronic device.
Step #3. Destroy Data on Data Storage Devices
This step is essential to protecting your sensitive data! There are various methods for data destruction, from performing a factory reset on the device to using an industrial-grade shredder to shred the contained data storage devices into tiny pieces. We never recommend simply factory resetting your device since there may still be backup recovery options available, opening you up to the risk of data theft. Check out our data destruction options below. Need help with destroying your data? Contact us to discuss the scope of your recycling project today!
AIT’s Data Destruction Services
AIT provides physical hard drive destruction with our industrial-grade shredder in our facility for a secure level of data destruction for any industry or individual.
If your data is completely destroyed, then it is also completely irretrievable.
Devices that we destroy include hard disc drives (HDDs), solid-state drives (SSDs) and other physical storage media. Contact us if you are unsure if we can destroy the data on your device!
Asset serialization is a scanning service where each of your devices receives a unique identifier. Once pickup and recycling is complete, you will receive an e-waste recycling report that shows you what services have been done to each item.
This is a helpful feature if you need proof of secure chain-of-custody for a specific count of devices. or if you have a large number of highly sensitive data-containing devices.
We can also serialize any device you would like, whether they are data-containing or not and destroy your data at your location if you are within the tri-state area.
This is particularly helpful if you have highly sensitive data or if your company or industry requires a data destruction witness.
